LINER NOTES
It all started at ‘The Palladium’ on Broadway. They established the billing of two top name Afra Cuban bands so there could be continuous dancing. Maxwell Hyman put his money where his passion was by establishing the Wednesday night Mambobacchanal ‘Mamboscope’. But now the neighbouring Roseland has ‘Mamborama’ on Tuesdays and ‘La Bamba’ which used to the jazz based "Music Box" now packs 'em in several nights a week on the mam bo beat. Even the Apollo and the Savoy Ballroom have Monday night mambo ravls.
The dedication to the mambo beat is such that there is little time for anything else in the clubs - not even flirting. Young men stand about, not as a stag line but to check out the merits of the steps being executed by other guys on the floor. Young women in colourful and tightly fitting, glittering garbs dance intricate and exciting movements, moving to the next partner at the end of each number for a different style.
The reason the mambo is so tremendous is that it is such a great exhibition dance. Every mambo dancer is a Star.
This disc presents you with the Kings of the Mambo - the leaders and their bands who created the rage. Tito Puente: ‘El Rey del Timbal’; Machito: America's first authentic Afro Cuban jazz group who was far ahead of his time (he played the mambo as early as 1942!); Tito Rodriguez that handsome guy with his tight and crisp outfit.
Voila! The greatest mambo hits by the Kings of the Mambo for all you exhibitionists and mambo diggers. Baile los ritmos calientes!
