Description Quote:
This album is very much of a product of the early 90's. So much so, that you may not appreciate it as much if you're younger than me (born in '78). I mean, Helmet? House of Pain? Biohazard? If you're younger than me, you probably don't even know who these people are.
That being said, it evokes the time period so well, that its almost like a historical document. Want to know what the L.A. riots felt like? Listen to "Disorder". It's chaotic, confused, violent and simple-minded. It might as well be a news report from that era. Similarly, the rest of the album reflects a time when crime and gang violence was considered the biggest epidemic facing America - bigger than AIDS, bigger than global warming, bigger than the war in Iraq. That darkness and underlying tension permeates nearly all of these tracks. Judgment Night was critically reviled upon its release, mostly by mainstream writers attracted by Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth who refused to meet the album on its own terms. Keep in mind, this was post-Rage Against the Machine and Anthrax/Public Enemy's pairing, but well before Limp Bizkit and Korn drove the "rap-metal" train into the ground. In almost every way, this project succeeds in what it attempts to do. No, on most of the tracks you're not going to hear the best rapping or the best metal. Not surprising, since Onyx and Therapy? aren't exactly the best rap group or best metal band, either. Where the album shines is making these songs come off as more than novelty tunes. The emcees are clearly instigated and invigorated by the energy of the music, driving them to deliver the material differently than they, or we, are accustomed to. The two sides come together more cohesively than anyone could have expected. Even still, there are a couple of tracks that stand out above the rest. Del's performance on "Missing Link" is my favorite of his. If you're a De La Soul or Faith No More fan, you need to check out their tracks as well, because they are right up there with their best material. Sure, there's filler like "Freak Momma" or "Come and Die", but even those tracks are pretty interesting. In all, I consider this to be one of, if not the, most underrated albums of all time.
