Summary:

When young Fool (Brandon Adams) breaks into the home of his family's greedy and uncaring landlords, he discovers a disturbing scenario where incestuous adult siblings have mutilated a number of boys and kept them imprisoned under stairs in their large, creepy house. As Fool attempts to flee before the psychopaths can catch him, he meets their daughter, Alice (A.J. Langer), who has been spared any extreme discipline by her deranged parents. Can Fool and Alice escape before it's too late?

Video encoded in two-pass 15.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.

Note : Here's a nice 4k upgrade to one of my early encodes, and apart from the image quality update, which is significant both from source and encode, it adds the original theatrical stereo, one more commentary track, and the Jaboody Dubs riff commentary. Well worth the upgrade.

Wes Craven was constantly innovating, and even between his most well known films, he was doing stuff that feels fresh and original today. In this case, it's The People Under the Stairs, perhaps his most political movie, dealing with racism, class relations, gentrification and capitalism in a brisk, pitch-black funny satirical horror movie. It also sports a great cast, from Brandon Adams doing a great job as the young lead, Ving Rhames in a smaller role, to Everett McGill and Wendy Robie as the villains, who were cast after Craven saw them play a Big Ed and Nadine Hurley in Twin Peaks, and who play a sort of nightmare Ronald and Nancy Reagan, and A. J. Langer and Sean Whalen as a pair of unfortunate, abused kids. One of my favorite horror movies from the 90s.

The story deals with "Fool", a young boy who is convinced to come along on a break and enter burglary at the house of the local slum lords, who are also the landlords threatening his family with eviction, and who are rumored to have a fortune in gold coins in their weird old house. However, the slumlords are far more twisted and dangerous than expected, and Fool ends up fighting for his life while also encountering the villains' daughter, as well as several of their rejected "children" who are locked up in the basement or roaming loose inside the walls of the huge house. There's also an extremely mean dog, and a memorable sequence with a gimp suit and a shotgun. It's twisted, very dark, and frequently pretty funny, with a number of unexpected twists and turns, and a banger of an ending.

This 4k remaster is a great upgrade to a film that already looked pretty good in the previous transfer. Grain is nicely managed, colors and contrast pop, detail is very nice, it's a pretty flawless image all in all. 5.1 remaster sounds good, stereo track as well, and we get a three commentary tracks this time, the new one with lead Brandon Adams in conversation with Calum Wadell, as well as the Jaboody Dubs track, in which it sounds like they're having a pretty exuberantly good time.
