Note : While Hard Boiled is definitely the most widely known in the west of John Woo's Hong Kong films, and it's clearly the most spectacular, his masterpiece is perhaps this, a smaller-scale, but no less awesome story of a hitman with a conscience and a cop who slowly grows to respect him, while the hitman accepts one last job to get the money to help a girl he accidentally blinded. It's high melodrama, bromance galore, but it's also full of some extremely cool, high-octane action sequences, and Chow Yun-fat has never been cooler than he is here, which is saying something. The John Woo style is also more prominent here, with triple-repeated action shots, freeze frames, slow motion, and flapping white doves (the final spectacular gunfight is in a church, of all things, and set to choral music). If you like cool men containing their feelings while shooting a lot, this is the film for you.

This Hong Kong Rescue remaster tries to be the definitive version of the film, and mostly succeeds. The image is very good, good contrast, velvety blacks, although perhaps the blacks could have been slightly less crushed. The inclusion of so many audio tracks and subtitle tracks I'm more split on, but I've included all the audio tracks, even though there are three Cantonese stereo tracks that are basically versions of the same, plus Chinese and Mandarin dubs. All three commentary tracks are included, of course.

Regarding the subtitles, there was essentially no difference between the HKR normal English subtitles and the SDH ones (only one additional song that was subtitled on the SDH track, while it really didn't have the other content you expect from an SDH track), so I just went with the "SDH" one, but extensively corrected a lot of weird English and such. Similarly, the old subtitle tracks were essentially identical except for the English names of the characters, so I included only one of the two, and didn't correct it much, since the bad English is kind of the point there.

I would strongly recommend watching this with the HKR Cantonese stereo remaster sound and the HKR English subtitles, which I think is the superior viewing experience both in sound quality and translation clarity.
