The Jewel in the Crown nog nauwelijks aan impact verloren. Immers, deze prachtige, epische serie
weet op sublieme wijze het einde van het koloniale tijdperk te verwoorden en de haat-
liefdeverhouding tussen Groot-Brittannië en India gedurende de jaren '40. Schitterende
acteersprestaties van de créme de la créme van de Britse toneelwereld schetsen een goed beeld van
hoe de onafhankelijkheid van Brits-Indië precies tot stand is gekomen. Een noodlottige romance en
een onterechte beschuldiging van verkrachting vormen de aanzet voor hevige rellen en een politieke
aardverschuiving. Hoewel politiek leider Mahatma Ghandi heeft opgeroepen tot geweldloos verzet,
breken er in het hele land gewelddadige opstootjes uit. De hoofdpersonen worstelen met hun
identiteit en hun verantwoordelijkheid tegenover zichzelf en hun omgeving. Ze worden
geconfronteerd met persoonlijke intriges en de dramatische consequenties van hun keuzes
in een wereld vol verandering.

The film opens in the fictional Indian city of Mayapore and is set during the 1940s against the
backdrop of the last days of the British Raj and the Indian independence movement. Hari Kumar
(Art Malik) is a young Indian man who was educated at the British public school (the term for a
private school) 'Chillingborough' and considers himself English rather than Indian. He works as a
journalist in India, lives with his aunt, and becomes involved with a British woman, Daphne Manners
(Susan Wooldridge). One night, Daphne and Hari are attacked in the Bibighar Gardens by a group of
unknown men and Daphne is raped.
