Synopsis:
Teenkahon is a set of three films, set in different times over a period of 100 years with a common theme - obsessive love.
The first story, Naabalok (immature) is set in the 1920's and is appropriately shot in black and white. It is the tale of an obsessive love of a young boy Sailen, (Barshan Sil) for a newly wed young girl Nayantara (Aranya), who arrives as a bride. The episode leaves its mark as the adult Sailen, unmarried even in his forties, relates the story to his friends on a night when thunder rolls and the rain falls in torrents. The Story is by Bibhutibhushan Mukhopadhyay.
The Second Story, Post Mortem (by Syed Mustafa Siraj) unfiolds the tale of a woman who has committed suicide. Her husband, again on a rainy day, goes to the house of her lover to find out why a young life had to end the way it did, and bit by bit, the story evolves from the verbal parry and thrust of the two protagonists played by Sabyasachi Chakraborty and Joy Sengupta, the episode is set in the late sixties and is appropriately shot in technicolor.
The Third story, Telephone, written by Bauddhayan Mukherji himself, is set in modern day Kolkata and is about a couple who have lost the meaning of love. The wife goes to great lengths to get pregnant - even through IVF. A son is born and when he is about 5 years old, an accidental shot from a loaded revolver kills the wife. Is it really an accident or a murder? As expected this part is shot with a digital camera.
Comments:
A brilliantly conceived film, Teenkahon is not just a story of obsessions. It is also a tribute to Bangla films over 100 years. The first episode, for example, brings back memories of the films of Satyajit Ray in its lyrical presentation. The episode is presented with some gently humourous overtones, but is never allowed to cross limits. Yet, it is a serious theme, for it has impacted Sailen, the protagonist all his life. The Director is at his best in this episode and brings out the best from his two young leads.
The second episode explores the responsibility of the suicide of a young girl through a dialogue between the husband and the lover of the deceased. I found it slightly long winded, a defect that was covered up by some splendid acting by both Sabyasach and Joy Sengupta.
The third episode is typically a scene from modern Bengal. The dialogue and the idiom has changed from the 'Bhadralok' language of the second to a typically slang filled modernity. The entire adulterous affair of the husband is caught, not through scenes of intimacy, but through the ringing of the telephone and the sms messages.
The Director, Baudhhayan Mukherji's maiden film is a landmark in Bengali cinema. The themes are beautifully handled, even if we get a little disturbed by the constant negativity. There is some fine detail work, from the dresses to the mannerisms and the speech. The film also has some superb editing by Arghyakamal Mitra. It starts with a languid pace of the first episode but the pace picks up as we get to the second and third episodes. The editing captures the mood of the fil perfectly.
The cinematography of Avik Bandyopadhyay, particularly in the first episode ( in black and white) is an outstanding feature of the film. Music is appropriate and overall production qualities excellent.
Unfortunately, the film does not have subtitles
This is a film to preserve..
Uploader's Notes:
As promised, a high quality X265 rip with full DTS sound which is completely in sync. Noramally a x265 rip should have been smaller that a x264 rip of similar quality, but the size in this case is larger because of the DTS sound and the higher bit-rate used for encoding. As a result there is greater detail, less banding and less blocking in high movement scenes.
The quality can be seen from the sample and the screenshots that we have provided..
Enjoy!
