Plot:

Picking up exactly where Star Trek II left off, the Enterprise and crew are returning to port for some essential repairs to their ship. When they arrive, they are shocked to discover the Enterprise is to be scrapped. When Dr. McCoy starts acting strangely, Kirk is forced to steal his old ship back and fly across space to a lonely planet to save a friend.

Trama:

La nave stellare Enterprise rientra al molo spaziale della Terra gravemente danneggiata dal recente scontro con il malvagio Khan (narrato nel precedente episodio, Star Trek II: L'ira di Khan).
Una volta rientrato, l'amm. Kirk viene informato che la nave non sarà più riparata ma messa in disarmo; di conseguenza l'ingegnere Scott viene trasferito sulla USS Excelsior NCC-2000, la nuovissima nave della flotta.
Kirk scopre che lo spirito di Spock, morto nel precedente episodio, è stato volutamente trasferito dal suo amico morente nella mente del dott. McCoy mediante un misterioso rituale vulcaniano.
