Nove ragazzi della Guardia nazionale in esercitazione si addentrano in una zona paludosa della Louisiana. È, quello, il territorio dei Cajun, una antica comunità di cacciatori di origine francese. I soldati fanno gli smargiassi e sottraggono ai nativi alcune canoe. Inizia così una guerriglia spietata: i ragazzini in divisa, sperduti e con armi caricate a salve, sono braccati e massacrati come conigli. Con mezzi minimi, sfruttando tutto il potenziale evocativo delle straordinarie location, Walter Hill realizza un capolavoro del cinema d'azione. Il riferimento al Vietnam e alla cultura machista americana è palese, ma la parabola, con passaggi di magistrale e insostenibile tensione, spinge la riflessione su piani quasi metafisici.
