De gewelddadige bokser Jake La Motta weet van jongs af aan al wat hij wil, de beste worden. Onder leiding van zijn broer Joey vecht La Motta zich naar de top. Maar zijn zegetocht verloopt niet vlekkeloos. Naarmate de druk toeneemt worden de waanbeelden en woede-uitbarstingen van La Motta groter. Zijn obsessieve jaloezie zorgt ervoor dat de relatie met zijn broer en zijn huwelijk met Vickie vroegtijdig eindigen. Langzaam maar zeker zorgt La Motta voor zijn eigen ondergang.
