Brady è l'autista mentalmente disturbato di un camioncino dei gelati. Un anno dopo aver investito e ucciso diverse persone con una Mercedes SL 500 rubata che in quella terribile occasione indossava una maschera da clown, comincia a inviare lettere e messaggi di posta elettronica a un detective in pensione, Bill Hodges, costringendolo a intraprendere una crociata personale e potenzialmente criminale per assicurare l'assassino alla giustizia prima che possa tornare a uccidere.
