Mischa Maisky plays the Cello Concertos 1 and 2 and his own transcriptions of two Haydn Violin Concertos in Vienna's Hetzendorf Palace - a master of the Viennese classical style performing in elegant Baroque surroundings. He also plays the Schumann Cello Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Leonard Bernstein.

The Schumann disc is a mixed bag. The symphony is one of the best recorded, but Mischa Miasky's reading of the Cello Concerto is arguably Bernstein's worst Schumann recording. Conversely, this is the best of the conductor's small non-Columbia Haydn output. Yes, it's a slightly heavier approach than his Columbia years, but still fully immersed in the composer's sound world. Besides, the Vienna Philharmonic plays magnificently.
