Joe Buck een knappe, naief-charmante cowboy uit Texas, die ervan overtuigd is dat hij de redding is van naar liefde hongerende vrouwen in New York, komt naar de Big Apple om rijkdom te vinden. Echter de enige rijkdom die hij vindt is de vriendschap met Ratzo Rizzo, een verlopen oplichter met grote dromen. In het leven aan de haveloze zelfkant van de maatschappij krijgen deze paria's een onwaarschijnlijke band die verder reikt dan hun verscheurde dromen en hun plannen om snel rijk te worden.

In a career-making performance, Jon Voight plays Joe Buck, a naive Texas dishwasher who goes to the big city (New York) to make his fortune as a sexual hustler. Although enthusiastic about selling himself to rich ladies for stud services, he quickly finds it hard to make a living and eventually crashes in a seedy dump with a crippled petty thief named Ratzo Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman).

At its heart the movie is a sad tale of friendship between a couple of losers lost in the big city, and with an ending no studio would approve today.

Texas greenhorn Joe Buck arrives in New York for the first time. Preening himself as a real 'hustler', he finds that he is the one getting 'hustled' until he teams up with a down-and-out but resilient outcast named Ratso Rizzo. The initial 'country cousin meets city cousin' relationship deepens. In their efforts to bilk a hostile world rebuffing them at every turn, this unlikely pair progress from partners in shady business to comrades. Each has found his first real friend.
