Android 12 and Beyond: First Look for Developers

Android 12 has entered the building. This next version of Android—which is available to developers and other Android users as a beta preview—introduces notable new features and changes in both functionality and appearance. In this course, David Gassner goes over the updated operating system, showing developers both the latest and greatest features in Android 12 and other changes to development tools and best practices that will impact their existing apps. Learn what's new in Android 12 for end users, including changes to privacy and sharing. Explore developer enhancements, including the new RenderEffect class that lets you modify images in an Android app at runtime. Plus, David goes over how to migrate from older file management strategies to scoped storage—as well as the deadlines for implementing these required changes.

Android 12 is next, but what's beyond?
“- [David] Each year around this time, Google releases a preview of the next version of Android. This year, it's Android 12. A version with significant changes in both appearance and functionality. As usual this year we can expect Google's own Pixel phones to adopt the new version of Android right away. But if history is any guide, devices from other vendors such as Samsung will be much slower to upgrade. So why should developers change their apps right away? As with all new versions of Android there are some great new features that only work with the latest version. Including the SplashScreen API, and render effects that change the appearance of images and other visual objects. But this year there are other changes that will affect many existing apps. Scoped storage, a set of restrictions and tools that dictate where you can store an app's files was originally implemented in Android 10. But strict enforcement of this restriction was delayed until now. Starting in November of 2021 legacy file system permissions will be banned. And apps can no longer freely use what the SDK calls external storage. Files and folders that are visible to file on management apps such as Google's own files. To use those files and folders, the user has to grant permission at runtime through the storage access framework. So in addition to covering features that are truly new, I'll describe how to migrate from older file management strategies to using scoped storage. So welcome to Android 12. Let's explore what the new version of Android has to offer.
