In un castello di un'isola dei Caraibi il conte Zaroff pratica la caccia all'uomo. La pericolosa partita (noto anche come Caccia fatale) è un film dalle inquietanti atmosfere con ambigui riflessi sadiani, una delle grandi pellicole del 'cinema del terrore', ben assecondata da un montaggio pregevole e da ottimi interpreti (su tutti Leslie Banks). Molti degli artefici di questo film si ritrovarono di lì a un anno a realizzare il primo leggendario King Kong. Del film vanno infine segnalati i numerosi remake, da Game of Death di Robert Wise del 1946 a La preda umana di Roy Boulting del 1956.
