L'Ulltimo Padrino (The Last Godfather) Genuine DVD Rip HEVC 10 Bit AAC 2.0 Subs EN

My DVD rips are always taken DIRECTLY from the actual DVDs, not re-encodings of an earlier h264 torrent, and not "filled in" with web downloads. HEVC is a superb machine, but it should be given quality raw materials.


This is the complete TV movie from 2008, telling the story of the hunt for Bernardo Provenzano, the Mafia boss who took over after the capture of the former "boss of bosses", Totò Riina.

This is in some ways a sequel to Il Capo dei Capi, and some of the cast of the earlier show appear here, in different roles. The character of Provenzano appeared in Il Capo dei Capi but here is played here by a different actor.

Unfortunately the idiots that produced this DVD did not understand anamorphic widescreen DVDs, so they preserved the 16:9 aspect ratio by framing it in a letterbox within a 4:3 screen (ugh). The same idiots also hard coded the English subtitles over the picture and also into the bottom border. Perché? Perché? You can view the hardcoded subtitles below.

I therefore created a 1024 x 576 (16:9) widescreen video but then added a sufficient black bottom border to include the aforementioned hardcoded subtitles; for this reason, the video is 1024 x 640, but the image forms the top 1024 x 576 pixels.

I used x265 to create a 2-pass VBR 10 bit HEVC of both parts. The video quality on the source DVD is pretty good, especially during the outdoor scenes, and x265.exe has done a good job. I ran it using using the "slower" preset, in two passes, at an average bitrate of 1000kbps. The encoding required about 18 hours for each part.
