''IN THE REVIVAL TENT,'' the gospel segment of the Arts & Entertainment Network music series ''New Orleans Now,'' will be shown tonight at 11 and again at 3 A.M. Wednesday on the cable channel.

Gospel isn't a purely local specialty in New Orleans like brass-band music and second-line funk. But it is a vital part of the city's gleefully interconnected musical culture, and second-line rhythms even make their way into church now and then.

The program includes choirs with solo singers and older style harmony groups. The show mixes slow ''surge'' songs and up-tempo tunes designed to make believers dance with the spirit of the Holy Ghost.

Of the eight groups in the program, two - Heavenly Star and the Dynamic Smooth Family - use the classic strutting rhythms of New Orleans. The Dynamic Smooth Family works up a vocal counterpoint reminiscent of brass bands; Heavenly Star, a harmony group, slips into a rocking rumba as its lead singer dances his way through the audience.

The Zion Harmonizers are the most traditional group, singing in deep, close harmony with minimal accompaniment. The Mighty Chariots, another harmony group, use a more modern funk beat.

The choirs will also remind secular listeners of 1960's soul singing - a raspy young female shouter with the Heralds of Christ, a soprano with the Pure Light Baptist Church Mass Choir rising in a crescendo behind her, and a teen-age boy singing, eloquently, about persecutions and sorrows with the Avondale Community Choir. The show-stopping finale is by the Followers of Christ, with a tenor belting out ''99 1/2.''

The performances are fervent; unfortunately, the host-director Jim Gabour hasn't quite captured them on video. To fit eight groups into the show, he enforces five-minute songs; just when the Mighty Chariots reach peak frenzy, they're cut off.

Meanwhile, the camera work tries to treat gospel groups like pop bands. It uses unnecessary odd angles and isolates the lead singers - although the music revolves around call-and-response within groups and between performers and audience.

Gospel isn't simply a stage show with fixed songs for passive concert goers; it's a participatory ritual. Yet while ''In the Revival Tent'' won't give viewers the entire New Orleans gospel experience, it's worth a look.
