In un giorno d'autunno del 1686, la diciottenne Nella Oortman bussa alla porta di una grande casa nel quartiere più ricco di Amsterdam. È venuta dal Paese per iniziare una nuova vita come moglie dell'illustre commerciante mercante Johannes Brandt, ma invece viene accolta dalla sorella dalla lingua tagliente, Marin. Solo più tardi Johannes appare e le presenta uno straordinario regalo di nozze: una replica a misura di gabinetto della loro casa. Deve essere arredato da un inafferrabile miniaturista, le cui minuscole creazioni rispecchiano le loro controparti della vita reale in modi inaspettati.
