Il Grinta è un'avventurosa storia Western di vendetta e coraggio.
Ambientato intorno al 1870, nell'America di frontiera subito dopo la Guerra Civile, è raccontato da Mattie Ross, che a 14 anni si mette in viaggio verso Fort Smith, nell'Arkansas determinata ad ottenere giustizia per la morte del padre, ucciso a sangue freddo.
Mattie Ross (Steinfeld) arriva a Fort Smith unica rappresentante della propria famiglia, in cerca del codardo Tom Chaney (Brolin), che si dice abbia ucciso suo padre in cambio di due pezzi d'oro, prima di fuggire in Territorio Indiano, facendo perdere le sue tracce. Determinata ad inseguire Chaney per vederlo un giorno impiccato, Mattie chiede aiuto ad uno dei più spietati sceriffi della città - l'ubriacone dal grilletto facile Rooster Cogburn (Bridges), che, dopo aver rifiutato più volte, alla fine accetta di aiutare Mattie a trovare Chaney. Ma Chaney è già inseguito dal ciarliero Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon), che da la caccia al killer per riportarlo in Texas e riscuotere la grossa taglia che pende sulla sua testa - circostanza che porta il trio ad incontrarsi lungo la strada. Determinati e testardi, ciascuno guidato da un suo codice morale particolare, formano un ensamble improbabile che cavalca verso un futuro imprevedibile avvolto nella leggenda e fatto di errori e brutalità, di coraggio e delusioni, accanimento e purissimo amore...
