William Hundert, vicepresidente della St. Benedict, crede molto nella sua missione di professore. Vuole trasferire ai suoi alunni non solo la conoscenza della storia dei Greci e dei Romani, ma anche i principi della cultura classica. Nell'autunno del 1972 però, la sua visione della scuola e del mondo, ispirata alla più austera tradizione, viene completamente scombussolata dall'arrivo della nuova matricola Sedgewick Bell. Con la sua indole ribelle, Sedgewick mette in discussione le vecchie regole della scuola ed entra in conflitto con l'autorità di Hundert.

William Hundert, vice president of St. Benedict' school, believes in his mission as a teacher. He wants to pass on to his students not only the knowledge of the history of the Greeks and Romans, but also the principles of classical culture. In the fall of 1972, however, his vision of the school and the world, inspired by the most austere tradition, was completely upset by the arrival of the new freshman Sedgewick Bell. With its rebellion, Sedgewick calls into question the old rules of the school and enters into conflict with the authoritie of Hundert.
