IDRIES SHAH (1924-1996) was an author and teacher in the Sufi tradition -- the mystical current in Islam -- who wrote over three dozen books on topics ranging from psychology and spirituality to travelogues and culture studies. His large body of work on Sufi thought and Eastern philosophy has been regarded as a cultural bridge between East and West.

Shah's early writings centred on magic and witchcraft. His seminal work, THE SUFIS (1964), won wide international praise. At a time when the study of Sufism had largely become the reserve of Orientalists, Shah's work introduced Sufi ideas to the West in a format accessible to non-specialists and stripped of cultural and religious accretions. The Washington Post declared it "a seminal book of the century", while writers such as Doris Lessing, JD Salinger and Geoffrey Grigson were all drawn to it.

His works have played a significant part in presenting Sufism as a universal form of spiritual wisdom that predated Islam. Emphasizing that Sufism was not static but always adapted itself to the current time, place and people, he framed his teaching in Western psychological terms. Shah made extensive use of traditional teaching stories, parables and jokes, texts that contained multiple layers of meaning designed to trigger insight and self-reflection in the reader.
