Description

Ginger Snaps (2000), directed by John Fawcett, Shout! Factory remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original theatrical 5.1, two commentary tracks, and English subtitles.

IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0210070/

Video encoded in two-pass 11.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image.

English SDH subtitles OCRed, proofed and corrected.

Note : This low-budget Canadian outing, directed by one of the two creators of sci-fi TV series Orphan Black, is more than it seems on the surface, using a fairly standard werewolf movie setup to draw sly, winking parallels to puberty, teen sexuality, drug use, and conflict with family and society. Anchored by a pair of very decent performances by the two leads (and Mimi Rogers as their mother), as well as some low-budget but extremely effective practical effects, it does what it sets out to do very well. For my money, an essential entry in the werewolf canon.

Death-obsessed sisters Ginger and Brigitte are social outcasts who once vowed to either leave the suburbs or die together by the age of sixteen. As they sneak out one night to take revenge on a school bully, Ginger gets her period, and is attacked by a wolf-like creature that's been mauling and killing dogs in the neighborhood. The two run away through the woods, and as they cross a road, the creature is hit and killed by the local drug dealer in his van. Ginger's wounds heal unnaturally quickly, and she starts going through a series of changes, growing aggressive and sexually outgoing, while Brigitte is unsure if the changes are due to puberty or something darker. When Ginger grows a tail, though, it's pretty clear that something weird is going on, and while the drug dealer, who's started a friendship with Brigitte, suggests a plant-based cure, the sisters get into a fight with the school bully who hits her head and dies, leaving them no choice but to bury her in a shallow grave. Things get complicated as Brigitte rushes to find a cure while Ginger is growing more difficult to control every day, with their parents and teachers getting involved.

This remaster is fairly middle of the road, but it's fine, I could maybe have wished for a bit more vivid color. Sound is good, both commentary tracks are very wortwhile.
