A Lincoln, piccolo centro del Nebraska, il ventunenne Brandon Teena vive una fase di grande confusione interiore. Deciso ad allontanarsi per poter partire da zero dove nessuno lo conosce, arriva a Falls City, un centinaio di chilometri lontano, incontra Lana e viene accolto a casa di lei: ci sono la mamma di lei, e John e Tom, due balordi che hanno passato alcuni periodi in carcere. Brandon e Lana stringono una forte amicizia, finché lui la bacia con grande passione. Ad un certo punto però Brandon non può più eludere le domande su se stesso e la sua provenienza. Processato per furto d'auto, viene rinchiuso in carcere, e qui rivela a Lana di chiamarsi in realtà Teena Brandon, una donna che però si sente maschio e in tale ruolo cerca rapporti con altre donne. In carcere Teena viene violentata, poi, quando esce, chiede a Lena di scappare insieme a Lincoln. John e Tom intervengono, colpiscono brutalmente Teena. In una crescente spirale di violenza, John poi uccide Teena, e Tom colpisce a morte Candy, la ragazza vicina di casa che era intervenuta involontariamente. Fuori campo, Teena legge una lettera scritta a Lana sulla loro difficile condizione.
