Bobby Bowfinger, produttore cinematografico e aspirante regista, è sull'orlo della bancarotta. Tuttavia riesce ancora una volta a farsi dare credito dalle persone che lui tiene sotto contratto, pur senza mai pagarle. Afferma di avere in mano una sceneggiatura dalla quale potrà nascere un film di sicuro successo. L'idea è quella di girare una storia con protagonista una grande star, senza che questi lo sappia. L'attenzione viene rivolta su Kit Ramsey, attore famoso sempre circondato da una corte di fedeli servitori. Kit però è in cura dallo psicanalista e quando si vede circondato da persone sconosciute comincia a pensare di essere molto malato e si nasconde. Scomparso Kit, Bobby non si perde d'animo: ingaggia subito il fratello di lui Jiff, praticamente identico, dapprima impacciato e poi più disinvolto soprattutto nelle scene con la bella Daisy, attricetta pronta a tutto pur di raggiungere il successo. Daisy è la prima a capire l'inganno preparato da Bobby. Mentre si gira l'ultima sequenza, arriva lo psicologo e tutto sembra andare a monte. C'è però un filmato che inguaia Kit e di questo si fa forza Bobby per ottenere la liberatoria e far uscire il film nelle sale. Il successo è grande e imprevisto. Bobby riceve allora la proposta di girare un nuovo film a Taiwan, però non Kit ma con suo fratello. I due arrivano sull'isola. In una scena movimentata si gettano su un gruppo di soldati taiwanesi. Loro sono i protagonisti.
