Plot:

From the time John J. Macreedy steps off the train in Black Rock, he feels a chill from the local residents. The town is only a speck on the map and few if any strangers ever come to the place. Macreedy himself is tight-lipped about the purpose of his trip and he finds that the hotel refuses him a room, the local garage refuses to rent him a car and the sheriff is a useless drunkard. It's apparent that the locals have something to hide but when he finally tells them that he is there to speak to a Japanese-American farmer named Kamoko, he touches a nerve so sensitive that he will spend the next 24 hours fighting for his life.

Giorno maledetto di John Sturges, è un film USA a colori di grande impatto scandalistico, uscito nel 1955 quando alcuni episodi di razzismo nei confronti dei Nisei, americani di origine giapponese, avvenuti durante la seconda guerra mondiale, cominciavano ad affiorare pubblicamente sconvolgendo la coscienza degli americani.
La pellicola si può considerare, da un certo punto di vista, l’ultimo western americano di impronta etico-giustizialista.
Il film è ambientato nel 1945 in una regione praticamente desertica degli Stati Uniti, due mesi dopo la fine della seconda guerra mondiale, in un’atmosfera quotidiana seriosa e a volte triste, segnata dalle numerose tragedie rilasciate dalla guerra, che con lutti e disagi di ogni genere aveva profondamente inciso, per lungo tempo, sulla psiche e gli atteggiamenti di gran parte della popolazione americana.
