Cast: Arpita Mukherjee, Dron Mukherjee, Souradeep Ghosh, Satrajit Majumder, Debapriya Roy and others
Direction: Sanghamitra Chaudhuri Genre: Thriller Movie Review :This psychological thriller doesn't exactly give you the goosebumps but it doesn't make you want to leave your seats either. While on the one hand, you wish your two-hours of cinematic experience got a bit more spookier, on the other, you feel that the film-maker deserves some credit for attempting to tell an 'unnatural' tale under such natural circumstances. Right at the onset, it is clarified that the film is based on a true incident narrated by a small-town girl. So, whether you 'Believe it or not, Rose Ville does exist'. The tag line tries to give a peek into the things to come — Somewhere a fear of love... Somewhere a love of fear. Rose (Arpita) is in love with Sameer (Dron). But her staunch Christian father is against the marriage. An emotional blackmail later, Rose is resigned to marry her childhood orphan friend, Robin (Souradeep). But three days before their marriage, Robin meets with an accident that leaves him severely injured. On the day of their wedding, Robin comes and meets Rose, they exchange rings and even consummate their marriage. But soon after, Sameer brings the news that Robin had passed away the very same day. Three months later, Rose is shocked to discover that she is pregnant. She decides on an abortion and after a few days, Sameer and Rose tie the knot and shift base to Kolkata. 'Three years' later, the couple chooses to sell off Rose Ville. But when Rose comes back, she is haunted by the 'Bhoot of Rose Ville', which in this case is her aborted child. With no skeleton cliches, white robed presence, black cats pouncing from all odd corners or rolling of eyes of a person possessed except in the last frame, Sanghamitra resorts to scare her audience with sound, thanks to a job well-done by Drono Acharya, Dipankar Chaki and Anirban Sengupta, the characters' scared expressions and a child's voice that occasionally keeps calling Rose "Mummy". Interestingly, there are no song-and-dance sequences in the film, which comes as a welcome relief. While Arpita's execution of Rose is creditable, her English bits in the voice of Trishna Mukherjee is way too accented. This becomes a misnomer as it stands in sharp contrast to Rose' dad's very Bengali English. Arpita, however, could have been a bit more expressive in showing her grief at having to leave Sameer and marrying Robin. Dron is more or less okay as Sameer but Souradeep could have brushed up on his acting prowess. Satrajit as Shyam, Rose' friend, definitely does a good job before the camera. Equally catchy is D Deb's cinematography and the subtitles in English. It would have been even better if the duration could have been restricted to a one-and-a-half hours making it more crisp. If horror is your cup of tea, then "TBORV" is calling out to you for a dekko. Trackers
